Biography Mary Wade

I asked the child how she came there, she told me a girl brought her there and stripped her; I told her I thought she knew them, and belonged to them; she said she did not; I let her out of the place, and told her to be a good girl and go home. Her research saw her involved in the organization, supervision and excavation of over 3000 dinosaur footprints in Lark Quarry in the Tully Ranges. This area is now a major tourist destination and is on the National Heritage list for the quality of dinosaur footprints. At age 18, Mary gave birth to her first child, Sarah Wade, on Norfolk Island.
Dr. Mary Wade spent much of her life hunting dinosaurs. She was 11 years old when  tried and convicted of violent theft and highway robbery at the old bailey on the 14 Jan 1789. If you have more hunting to do, try a new search or browse the convict records. • Then I asked them what they had done, and they said, nothing; but I promised them I would not tell; and they told me they took a frock, a tippet, and a cap, off a little girl, in the Treasury.
  • Five days later, in the spirit of celebration, all the women on death row, including Mary Wade, had their sentences commuted to penal transportation to Australia.
  • Her scientific legacy is wide and varied and reflects an academic rigour applied to a very wide group of fossils.
  • - It is the other girl that induces her out, when my back is turned, to go a begging with her.

Therefore you are to consider, whether the fact is sufficiently established against both or either of these prisoners. Now, that this child was drawn away into this privy by somebody, and was there stripped of her cloaths, stands so clearly established, that there can be no doubt about it, upon the evidence of Mrs. Forward. Now tell me how you lost your frock, and your cap, and your tippet?

Mary the sauropod was named in honour of Dr Mary Wade, a former Curator of Palaeontology at Queensland Museum, now living at Hughenden. In some way or another Dr Wade has been involved in nearly every major dinosaur discovery that has taken place in western Queensland over the last 30 years. Many of the sauropod finds made in the Winton District, including Elliot, would never have come to light if it were not for her efforts. Dr. Wade retired from the museum in 1993 and moved to Western Queensland, assisting in the development of fossil centres in Richmond and Hughenden. She had many friends in the region, and continued to promote new finds of fossil material through theses contacts.

She was one of a boatload of female convicts sent on the Lady Juliana to the fledgling colony of New South Wales in July 1789. In what was one of the longest recorded convict voyages Mary finally arrived in Sydney Cove as a 14 year old in June 1790 having spent more than 10 months at sea. Rapidly developing an affinity for the Queensland Outback, she established many  local contacts and through teir assistancew collected new dinosaur remains in the Winton district.
As far as the records show, she was the youngest female to be transported to the Antipodes. She sailed with the Second Fleet, on the Lady Juliana, a ship comprised entirely of women convicts. It had been noted by the authorities that the colony was in ‘great need of women.
When she was seven the family moved to Thistle Island in the Spencer Gulf, where she first developed an interest in geology. Initially, she was educated by correspondance until she was sent, on a scholarship, to the Wilderness School in Adelaide as a border. She studied for her Bachelor of Science in geology at Adeliade University before undertaking postgraduate studies. She undertook research into tertiary aged microfossils fro her Ph.D under the guidance of Professor Martin Glaessner. In the early 1980's, some diligent family members did their research and published a book titled ”Mary Wade to Us”. It told the early stories and traced the family trees of thousands of Mary's descendants.
